Grossology

Studies have shown that many boys like action and enjoy seeing characters overcome challenges. Grossology fits the bill on both counts. There is action without violence. Characters use their brains and some pretty cool gadgets to solve mysteries. There is humour and an equal balance between older sister Abby and younger brother Ty. The siblings’ parents are also involved with their children, although they are a tad “uncool.”  Although her voice is overly feminized, Ty and Abby’s mom is a strong female who likes science–she is an entomologist. Dad is also involved and also works in the science field as the manager of the local water plant.

Abby can be a bit silly at times—gushing over animals and boys—but overall she is depicted as a smart and confident girl who likes science. (From what I have seen, newer character Paige is a bit of a stereotype though.)

Males are also strong characters, save for the somewhat ridiculous Director. Some of the language and situations are a bit crass but not entirely out of place in a program about human gas, vomit, and other yucky things. Ages 7 and up. This show airs on YTV in Canada and Discovery Kids in the US.
