The Snail and the Whale
Julia Donaldson is perhaps best known for her book The Gruffalo, a great story for young kids. I love The Snail and the Whale for the illustrations, its environmental message, and for the fact that the tiny snail with a huge sense of adventure is identified as “she.” The female teacher in this book is a bit of a stereotype, but the overall story of a snail seeking an exciting adventure trumps the strict, matronly teacher who turns pale at the sight of the snail. This book, written in rhyme, will appeal to children of both sexes. Good for kids in kindergarten and up.
